Talc on picklehaube?

Do a nice pickle was posted on WAF and it has a thin layer of what looks like talc ? I have seen this before and assumed it was mould or something?

Hi Rob,

The exterior lacquer or finish has oxidized, which creates this whitish color film on the surface of the helmet.

For many - even advanced collectors - it does not detract from helmet quality; it is even added value as it confirms that the helmet has not been touched for a very long time. At the September Kube auction, most historical helmets and Tschapkas from Bavarian princes showed this white surface. The Germans name it the "old chocolate" appearance.

I get this finish on some A2 jackets i had stored away. just get brushed it off.

Gentlemen,

I have seen a few examples of Pickelhauben in friends' collections that are mint and unworn and are covered with what appears to be a talcum powder coating. I was told they came from the manufacturer like this.

What is the story with the powder? What was its purpose? An example shown below.

Google-AI also gives tips to eliminate it (Term: Fatty spew (or spue)) … But I wouldn’t recommend this, as you could completely ruin the helmet very quickly.
