Do you have photos of your GGF, or a name and which regiment he served? Looks like a NCO helmet M/91. The large emblem is really nice. The Bavarian cockade is missing?
The value depends on condition and history. If you can prove that the helmet belonged to a NCO in a regiment, the price increases. Do you have a photo where he wears it, it’s even better. Hello,
Bavarian helmet model 1886 type for the troop, or enlisted one year of private purchase (Eigentum) . With the post-side to fix the chinstrap it is a modified M86 96 (for Bavaria). With its domed scales, it is a chevauleger helmet. With its large front plate with laurel branches, this helmet does not have the new entry to war plate. Since 13-2-1914, the laurels have disappeared from the front plaque, which has been slightly reduced in size. But when war broke out, not all the plaques would have been exchanged!
It is not a regulation helmet (supplied by the army) but a ‘fancy’ helmet bought in the shops, as the quality is superior, and the silk-backed cap is of the ‘officer’ type.
Value in France: around €800 because the cockades are missing.

That is a nice helmet, you should get a price in line with what some of the others posted above. A photo of your ancestor wearing the helmet will help guarantee authenticity and keep the price up too.

He got the helmet from has greatgrandfather, but he does not say it's a family piece. That would give it less emotional value so selling it is not that weird in that case. Just my opinion of course.
