Thanks

Odd photos, the badge and spike look massive and front peak looks tiny. Can you ad some photos looking at it from the same level rather than from above and the whole of the interior without cropping it so tight. Thanks Bob

Do you have photos of your GGF, or a name and which regiment he served? Looks like a NCO helmet M/91. The large emblem is really nice. The Bavarian cockade is missing?
The value depends on condition and history. If you can prove that the helmet belonged to a NCO in a regiment, the price increases. Do you have a photo where he wears it, it’s even better. But in the end, it's only worth as much as people are willing to spend on it. In any case, I struggle with prices for helmets.

It's a nice helmet. It would be a shame to sell it if your GGF actually used it in WW1, but I would say over a grand. Rob

Hello,
Bavarian helmet model 1886 type for the troop, or enlisted one year of private purchase (Eigentum) . With the post-side to fix the chinstrap it is a modified M86 96 (for Bavaria). With its domed scales, it is a chevauleger helmet. With its large front plate with laurel branches, this helmet does not have the new entry to war plate. Since 13-2-1914, the laurels have disappeared from the front plaque, which has been slightly reduced in size. But when war broke out, not all the plaques would have been exchanged!
It is not a regulation helmet (supplied by the army) but a ‘fancy’ helmet bought in the shops, as the quality is superior, and the silk-backed cap is of the ‘officer’ type.
Value in France: around €800 because the cockades are missing.

NB. Be careful not to bend the chinstrap under the helmet or it may break. It's best to either button it into place between the visor and the faceplate, or unbuckle it from the side post.

If I'm not mistaken the curved chinscales and squared visor would make this an NCO of foot artillery.

Great explanation. I did not notice the missing cockades so I concur with the others on price. Rob

That is a nice helmet, you should get a price in line with what some of the others posted above. A photo of your ancestor wearing the helmet will help guarantee authenticity and keep the price up too.

He got the helmet from has greatgrandfather, but he does not say it's a family piece. That would give it less emotional value so selling it is not that weird in that case. Just my opinion of course.

I would list it here in the classified section and sell it directly to one of the members here who would love to have it for their collection and would preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

Personally, I would start a little higher maybe 1000 US you can always go down in price, but you can never go up. ;)

I might be interested in the helmet, as I am building up my collection again. Drop me a message here, if you've got a price in mind for it.
I like it, despite the missing kokarden.

Regards, Coert.
