Hi guys,
I made some pictures for you in Verdun.
All of these pictures are from fort Douaumont ,but the big 14/18 museum was closed, :x due to renovation works, it will reopen in 2016.
I do not know how to feel with the display of the bones, as a reminder of how cruel war is, it hits the target, but as tourist attraction :???:
HOPE YOU LIKE MY PICTURES.

Nice photos of one the eeriest places on the westernfront I know. Thanks for sharing :D

Regards,

Edwin

Yes a very eerie place, went there in the autumn of 96 to save money myself and my mate were going to sleep in the car, pulled off the road on the morte homme and bedded down, between the foxes screaming and the vision of the ossury visited earlier we gave up on it and headed into town. If you have not read it there is no finer book on verdun than Alistair Horne the price of glory.

Tourist attraction....that's what people make of it.... The Ossuaire is a National Necropolis.

But...on headgear: have you been to Fort de la Pompelle ?? http://www.reims.fr/culture-patrimoine/musees-et-collections-permanentes/fort-pompelle.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

have you been to Fort de la Pompelle ??

i went this holliday on a trip to normandy
and on the way back home i went to fort the la pompelle to see the big collection of pickelhaubes
it was a total disaster only 20 helmets where on view
al the rest was taken away due to renovations
in september 2016 the will come back in display but not all of themn
apperentley there were 560 haubes to look at but only 300 or more wil come back in 2016
i ask this on the curator in fort de la pompelle

i gues that the trip next year will be at the spot that louise has been to
thanks for fixing my next holliday :thumb up: \:D/

Thanks for the heads-up kaiser, it is a good thing you wrote this because I was planning on going! #-o
Are the helmets kept in a bunker? :? I hope they have a good climate control; maybe that’s why most of them need restauration.

Gunner cooper it’s funny you wrote about the howling wildlife in Verdun , because I ran into a deer ,it just stopped and stared at me for a few seconds and then took off.

as far as the curator told me ,the helmets are kept in hand of the owner of the helmets and just 20 or so stay there for the display otherwise it was empty there museum
i will look for the pic i took when i went there and wil post it here along with other if nececery

At the end of June I was in the city of Nantes, in Western France, and I met an older gentleman who, besides being a renowned expert in numismatics, happens to be a retired architect. He was telling me of one of his former colleagues, also an architect from Nantes, and described his office that was full of old german helmets... I understood when he told me his name: Charles Friese, the man who amassed this collection of hundreds of Pickelhaubes that was donated to Fort de la Pompelle after he passed away. Funny coincidence.

Thanks for sharing Jonas.
Oh my, look at all those helmets, if you were allowed to choose one, which one would it be?
I know what I would choose; the cuirassier in the middle, that would be a dream come true.

for me it would be very easy
none of them ,becose the one i want for my collection is not in display at the picture
wel there are two actualy
1st one a hessen 117 regiment in feldgraue
2nd braunschweig helmet in feldgraue
but if i have to ill take the busby with the big skull
looks scary

Great !
Is this picture showing the only display on the headgear in the museum ?
Is the motherload no longer on display ?

Thank you,
Francis

the ones in the pic and a few besides the foto shown here are the onley once that were in display
by hearing from other friends/ visitors in the past i wanted to defenetley visit this museum
but now in this mather i guess it was the first and last time i go there
it was a total blown off to me
i had my hopes that high for looking at approximatly 560 haubes or more and then this happens
it was a big disapointment

I visited the museum in the early 1980s. I thought it was a shame that, at the time, there was no climate control in the underground galleries. There was mold on leather and uniforms. The helmets were in better shape as they were in cases, but on the whole, I had the impression that if they didn't do something, the collection would eventually be ruined. I'm happy to know that such things are being addressed. The days of the old museums, with everything out on display, are coming to an end. They did the same thing at the Royal Belgian Army Museum. Modern museums are more about interpretation than artifacts. That is great for the general public, but for collectors and specialists, it's somewhat of a loss. Most of the collections end up being stored where very few will ever see the extent of the holdings.

Yeah Chip, kinda like your collection:) You should load up your whole collection and bring it to SOS and put on a show.

Loved the trip to Verdun , so much to see of interest. Along bus ride though from blighty . Wont be travelling that way again.
