Weitze is known to buy at both the HH & Kube auctionsThe Kasket Modell 1818 for Chevaulegers was sold in an Hermann Historica Auction many years ago. Weitze bought it there for 8.000€, there was no other bid on it. Then he offerd it in his shop for 20.000€ (indeed an super rare item, but a waaaaaaaaaay to expensiv in my opinion). But at least he found a buyer for it...
Interesting postFunny you mention that one Steve, I've been watching that one for a few years. I really liked the look of it, but it fell into that period of History where that kind of money just doesn't make sense at least to me.
It's a super rare Helmet in beautifully restored condition and if it was from and worn during the Napoleonic Wars, I would have lost sleep even at that super high price until I could've somehow have convinced my wife that 20,000 euros was a sound investment for a helmet that only I would have an interest in looking at and really has no practical function.
Weitze is world famous with thousands of people looking at his site every week hoping that a "new" Helmet will pop up that can fill that void and give pleasure to its new owner, but this one sat on a shelf for several years. At 20k + (which in my opinion is double its true value) the average collector would have zero chance of getting out of this Helmet should the need arise. I'm sure it went to someone who could care less about the cost and has absolutely no worries of a possible resale at some point.
I would also add he has some ebay shoppers working for him as well. I've seen several ebay sales resurface on his site. Cheers John Josef
I like how you think, kindred spirit.we must figure in the "enjoyment factor "
see how I can talk myself into anything
IF given the time to think about it ?

My collector friend Charles in Belgium
once told me ;
" Steve , I don't regret the deals that I have done ,
I only regret the ones that I didn't do "
