What are common red flags in fake pickelhaubes

Most of the metal work doesn't look too bad actually, if those it could actually be worth buying for the parts.

I have a different opinion than most stated here: This is an older helmet with high dome shape, bolt on chin scales and heavy gauged leather. The spike with pearl ring matches these characteristics. The Fuerst JR 94 Wappen is rare and looks original to me, this alone would be worth over $500US. The bolt on scales are thick and proper for a helmet of this age. Yes, the kokarden don't belong and have been repainted along with the rosettes. However, this could be fixed easily. The liner is completely "fake" and it appears that the interior has black paint for some reason. At the same time we see thick cast brass nuts on the spike base brads which again are proper for an older helmet. Having consulted "The Kaisers Bunker" resource, I believe that this is a model 1867 which did not have a rear spine as we see here. One could be much more decisive in judging this if you had it in hand. However, in my opinion, there are many positives about this helmet and I would not describe it as a fake or Frankenstein piece.

To clarify WT: This is an older helmet probably a model 1867 with a rare helmet plate on it worn by only one regiment in the entire German army. This regiment, JR 94 (Infantry Regt.) comes from the small Saxon Duchy of Saxe Weimar. The regiment was created in 1762 and was part of the XI Army Korps. The original liner is gone and some pieces have been painted but that can be removed. Consequently, you might want to rethink your decision here. The value of the chin scales, wappen and spike are worth more than the quoted price and always offer him a bit less. :)

Getting better pictures of the inside of the shell would definitely help, but for his asking price it's definitely worth taking a better look at.

I have come back to the shop and I think the shape of the helmet has changed i took a video and more pictures but for some reason I am unable to send those I will try my best to send them

I have a video on it I will be able to send it once I get to my computer sorry for the very very late update It has been very hard to get back to the shop this was in because of my year 11 exam coming up

Someone really horribly screwed around with this helmet.

As someone said earlier here, it looks like someone tried to restore the damage to one side of the helmet body, and they did a very poor job of work on it. I can see the "scratching" marks on the interior of the helmet shell or body where someone worked on it.

The liner is also horribly cobbled together in an incorrect fashion, using modern leather. What a sad sight to see with this helmet.

When I first saw it months ago there were less dents and the shape looked different, I wonder if the antique show is trying to restore it and they failed?

The person who worked on this helmet is Not a professional, and they did not know what they were doing when they cobbled this together.

It also looks like the wappen is held onto the helmet by split brads that have been painted black. So it makes me wonder if the front plate lost the original pair of screw posts or the wire loops from the back side of the wappen, and someone put the split brads on the back of the wappen. Who knows... Hard to say with this poor old helmet. Sad to see it like this.

Depending on the price, I would seriously consider buying it just for the parts. The spike assembly is good, the Wappen looks good and Wappens to the Saxon Dutchies are hard to find. The chinscales are also good.

The rest of the helmet is a mess but, that should be the basis for some price negotiation.

I am having trouble uploading videos could someone please help me with this, also how much would you guys pay for the helmetand what would you guys say is a good price

I agree with Steve.

Kokardes look to be Saxon, possibly repainted, spike looks real, notice it seems never to have had a rear spine ??
Skull interior has been severely messed with.😠

The interior of the helmet was repaired with a bandage. The item can be salvaged as long as the black grease is removed from the center of the pickelhaube.I would not condemn this helmet to annihilation and parts donor.

To be clear.

I'm not suggesting that the helmet be purchased in order to salvage the parts from it and tossing the shell..

What I'm saying is that the value of the parts by themselves make a compelling argument for purchasing it.
