What regiment is this? A quiz???

I thought I would try the approach of revealing this helmet through a series of hints. It is an extremely interesting example that puzzled several of the leading European collectors for some time. This is a perfect example illustrating my frustration with Larcade. One advantage this forum offers is that we can all learn -- especially me.
Many of you who went to SOS know that I bought a helmet early Thursday morning. Actually I made a deal sight unseen on Wednesday night. This was very unusual for me for several reasons. This was the first helmet I had bought at SOS. Winning a bit more at the casino, than I paid for the helmet helped a little bit. But the real shocker is….. It is an enlisted helmet and an Ersatz helmet. So if you think you are an Ersatz collector make some guesses here. And I will reply with a hint. If this is a crappy idea I will drop it.
I am sure I will get some well-deserved crud for having bought an enlisted helmet. There must have been a reason. James and Gus know what regiment this helmet eventually made it to but they do not know where it came from. So I will ask them to refrain from telling anybody anything about what they know.
Background hint:
It is an Ersatz helmet with a cover. The cover has numbers for specific regiment. There is an identification tag inside the cover, which is the first hint. The name seen on the identification tag is duplicated the pencil (blue) under the front visor. Therefore, it seems as though the helmet and the cover have always been together.
The questions:
1. What regiment -- regiment is marked on the cover?
2. What regiment -- regiment did this soldier come from?
3. What exact kind of wappen is on this helmet?
The only needed hint.

So please lay out your reasoning. Make a guess. This is about collecting. Share your ideas. Ask questions. Too often people will not jump in, unless they absolutely know the answer -- I doubt if anyone knows this, not even R1, but it can be a huge amount of fun trying. You can learn a great deal about Ersatz and units by participating or perhaps it is just boring and I will drop it.

I cannot participate as I have seen it, but all I can say is this should have been mine, mine, mine!!! This is what happens when you sit at the wrong end of the dinner table!

I am happy Joe got it!!

Oh Poop, the only quiz I have a chance in. Even if I do not get to play, this is a great idea Joe. We learn more from discussion than from the correct answer, often it helps more to know why something is not, rather than what it is.

Gardist

His last name = Opper

Feld-Batl. 70 4. Komp.

So true. My usual lousy pictures! My new camera does a really lousy job at close-ups. The old one had an anti-shake setting that this one does not have. I am not going outside to take pictures. Here in Texas is 40°F and raining. Who started this rumor about global warming?

Hey Joe,
I have trouble taking photos out side too, the photos are always to high contrast due to the bright sunlight, I understand the best way is to dig a tunnel in the snow and let the snow diffuse the light.

Yea yea I know pulling the quote out-of context changes it, but come on Joe, you LOVE issue stamps as much as I do. Why would you NOT collect issue helmets with great markings?? And really, without the men (who do the slugging it out with the bad guys) as a Colonel, you would have just have been a guy standing in the field with your junior-General's kit. If I can edge you towards Tschakos............... Mannschaften Helme beckons.........

One more hint please? Pickelhaube? Tschako? The other types I think, do not apply with that owners label.

LOL!!!!! if only it had always been like that!!! LOL

More of a hint. Filz pickelhaube metal trim on the front visor. There is a regimental history in existence for the regiment in "question number one". Actually another hint shako could not apply with that owner's tag.

"Here me now oh thou bleak and unbearable world, thou are based and debauched as can be.... for a holy endeavor is now to begin and virtue shall triumph at last!" I do not say it as well as Cervantes but I must resist collecting everything! Actually I can be convinced to move this along but I will not separate it. I think I will add to it by putting in the regimental history to the group.

Let it lie, Tony - we don't want every Tom, Dick and Joe scooping up this stuff do we?.........I'm gonna show you my recently aquired Sachsen Reserve soon (with all the markings) - if this doesn't convince him nothing will...........

.......and I don't have a clue about this quiz - does it have a steel Garde wappen on it at present? :-s

does it have a steel Garde wappen on it at present? Eh?

No. And the wappen is yellow/bronze/gilt/not gray.

Tough one.........

Yes but I gave you extremely little to go on. So now here are on a few other ideas for those who do not yet understand this...

The individual involved has the title Gardist. Gardist is one of those titles applied to private soldiers based on the function of the unit they belonged to. For example, Ulan Jones, Füsilier Smith, Musketier Robinson. The actual rank of the soldier was Gemine in each case but they were referred to by their function name. Based on a history of the unit some titles applied to only certain types of units. Being able to determine which title went with which units is one key to identification.

Tony has sent me an e-mail where he is getting warm. I am sure he still digging :) :) :)

Just remember that some people failed on this one for a long time! :D :D :D In fact, the guy I bought it from did not understand-once you see it. It's like slapping your forehead. If you don't dig how will you ever understand these things?

When/if he sends his analysis. I will unveil much! Where are all the other attempts?

Hint; this has nothing to do with the Garde Corps.

Thanks to those who tried!

Looking at the information on the owner's tag you can identify everything about the owner. The title Gardist was limited to I and II JR 115. Therefore at some period of time this individual was associated with one of those two battalions. Perhaps he served his active time in I/115. As he returned to the colors perhaps from the Landwehr he entered into Field Battalion 70 which was the expansion unit for JR 115 (sort of a IV/115).When the decision to create RJR 254 December 1914 Field Battalion 70 (JR 115) was joined with Field Battalion 71(JR 168) and Field Battalion 72 (JR 116) to create JR 254. The information below comes from the unit history of RJR254.

This example shows a lot of well known inconsistencies in these helmets. For instance, it is from a reserve unit, but there is no Landwehr cross on the helmet wappen. This entire unit is not addressed by Lacarde which seems to be an unfortunate common occurrence is his accurate but incomplete listings.
