I thought I would try the approach of revealing this helmet through a series of hints. It is an extremely interesting example that puzzled several of the leading European collectors for some time. This is a perfect example illustrating my frustration with Larcade. One advantage this forum offers is that we can all learn -- especially me.
Many of you who went to SOS know that I bought a helmet early Thursday morning. Actually I made a deal sight unseen on Wednesday night. This was very unusual for me for several reasons. This was the first helmet I had bought at SOS. Winning a bit more at the casino, than I paid for the helmet helped a little bit. But the real shocker is….. It is an enlisted helmet and an Ersatz helmet. So if you think you are an Ersatz collector make some guesses here. And I will reply with a hint. If this is a crappy idea I will drop it.
I am sure I will get some well-deserved crud for having bought an enlisted helmet. There must have been a reason. James and Gus know what regiment this helmet eventually made it to but they do not know where it came from. So I will ask them to refrain from telling anybody anything about what they know.
Background hint:
It is an Ersatz helmet with a cover. The cover has numbers for specific regiment. There is an identification tag inside the cover, which is the first hint. The name seen on the identification tag is duplicated the pencil (blue) under the front visor. Therefore, it seems as though the helmet and the cover have always been together.
The questions:
1. What regiment -- regiment is marked on the cover?
2. What regiment -- regiment did this soldier come from?
3. What exact kind of wappen is on this helmet?
The only needed hint.
So please lay out your reasoning. Make a guess. This is about collecting. Share your ideas. Ask questions. Too often people will not jump in, unless they absolutely know the answer -- I doubt if anyone knows this, not even R1, but it can be a huge amount of fun trying. You can learn a great deal about Ersatz and units by participating or perhaps it is just boring and I will drop it.
