What to display with an M1842?

  • Tony,
I would like to ask you about your musket. What is the length of the barrel and the OAL?
If your musket is the infantery one ,then should be 145 cm OAL and length of the barrel 104,5 cm.-according the book from Hans-Dieter Goetz. I have the same musket-same model- but shorter :length of the barrel 85,5 cm and OAL is 124 cm. I thought that my one could be for Jager or some kind of the shooters, but you wrote that Jager have had iron fitings. So can you tell me what kind of troops have had the type of mine?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexandr

Sadowa, I regret the delay in this reply.

My musket is 143.5cm long. Barrel is 105cm. I am not a good source for information, everything I wrote about my musket, was the result of George researching it (thank you again George!). I think you should post your musket on the link George provided. They are very knowledgeable there.

Jean-Pierre,
I know you like Hessian helmets, and now I see why. However, I did not know you also had an M1842. Oy! Félicitations! Oh...and I see grass??? We had 20cm of snow yesterday. I see no grass here..... :sad7:

Hello,

I did not know you also had an M1842

This one belongs a good friend, and we are talking about exchange...
As you can see, the "Kinnriemen" is not stricly matching.
Best regards \:D/

Can't believe you haven't found a bayonet. These muskets were imported to The US during the Civil War in fairly large numbers. The bayonets usually turn up at shows in this area.

Witch type exactley are you looking for then can you provide a picture on the specific bayonet you are looking for
I have three types of those early bayonets you might be looking for

Honestly I have no idea. I don't collect bayonets. I believe there is a specific bayonet for the M1809/39 that was permanently affixed? Perhaps someone can post one and tell me what to look for.

Here is a photo of one that was available at Stewart's Military:

http://www.stewartsmilitaryantiques.com/prussian-m1809-socket-bayonet.15955.archive.htm

This triangle shaped bayonet was used by virtually all armies through the 1870's.

There is another type of flat blade bayonet that saw military use during the early Napoleonic Wars and is often referred to as a "hunters bayonet".
Here is an example that has been decorated and re-purposed:

This type would not be appropriate for your rifle since it was out of service before the flintlock went away.

This is the exact same type Jonas, and in much better condition. I believe that these were in use up to the development of the 1871 11mm Mauser Rifle.

That should be the right one.

The bayonets were hand fit onto the weapon run. My barrel is 22mm. The one at JJ the interior is 20.5mm.

The problem is getting one that fits. As nice as it is, the one at JJ wouldn't have fit by 1.5mm.

What a shame, as its a very nice example.
