What's that badge?

Chip - that's the one! Fantastic - many thanks! What little I can find online about the "Vaterländischer Hilfsdienst" badge relates to the German Civilian Service Bill of 5 December 1916, where every male between 17 and 60 who is not serving in the army is bound to render patriotic axillary service for the period of the war.

This would suggest the lad is 17 years old (I doubt it) and the date is sometime after the 5th of December 1916.

About von der Marwitz - he's in my 'maybe' category. Thanks Robert. I'm trying to get a better pic of him to see if he has those 'lumps'.

May I suggest another possibility; General Otto von Emmich, Der Sieger von Luettich, http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_von_Emmich .

I withdraw my suggestion, as von Emmich died already in 1915. :(
I do hope you will still enjoy these period pictures. If not; I will delete the message above. :(

He was a "maybe" candidate there for a second. The (fabulous) photo of him speaking with the Kaiser had me making comparisons.

Thanks Pierre, back to the drawing board :)
