    Opinions - 1870 EK1

You are 100% correct. The operative word is "Good". There are several coffee table books out there that have beautiful photos but offer absolutely no information. A combination of older publications and newer publications along with internet research generally provides the required information...

    m1915 Prussian Pickelhaube Cardboard Visors

I don't think $310 is too much. Actually that's not bad judging by some of the prices I've seen lately. This is not a cheap hobby. Get Brian's help when you think about restoring it. Congratulations. John

Seeking Opinions on this Officer Helmet

Yes. Thanks Tony. I don't speak French but my wife does. Here's the translation: 1866 By A.K.O. of November 7, 1866, the Line battalions also wear a haarbusch in parade gear. It is in black horsehair (red for the trumpets) for the eight battalions. This year three new corps were formed: the IX...

Seeking Opinions on this Officer Helmet

Clovis 57, Could I get the name of your source saying that the Haarbusch was not worn by Train Battalions until 1867? Does this source also state which Train Battalions were authorized to wear it? Thanks, John

Seeking Opinions on this Officer Helmet

I agree, the price is beefy. I was thinking of making him an offer. He says in the ad that he bought it from Weitze. What do you think, Infantry or Train? I know the regulations changing curved to flat chinscales was in 1857. Previously flat chinscales were used by all regiments until 1816/1818...

Seeking Opinions on this Officer Helmet

I have been looking at this helmet for about ten days now. It has been re-listed on Ebay at least once. I am very interested, but I would like other opinions. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174835991766?hash=item28b50984d6:g:y1gAAOSwPltg3fvM It is advertised as Infantry, but I believe that it is...

    Unusual Painted Camos Pic

I know many collectors who would call each and every one of these helmets fake. You can miss many historical aspects of this hobby by strictly adhering to rigid rules set out in the German directives of the time. John

    Is this worth restoring?

This is one of those British copies from the 1970's. The stitching is a dead giveaway. They are aged to appear old but there are several ways of telling. The liner edge as it appears in profile is one of the easiest ways to identify these. The "bulge" in the spike is another. The lack of detail...

    Another Unusual Camouflage Pattern M16

The military directive of 7 July 1918 directed that all steel helmets be painted in equal sized segments with square edges. The colors were to be green, darkened yellow , rust, and brown. The segments were to be separated by black lines about 1/2 inch wide. This helmet meets only a portion of...

    Model 1871 Prussian Bayonet

I have had several of these. Some were unmarked and some were marked to a unit. I have never seen this type of engraving, in script, on one of these before. Earlier pieces commonly had script engraving, but these were usually block stamped. Very unique! Nice find. John
