    JzP M15

Take a look at this pile of pickelhaubes. Don't you think there is a good chance that my helmet could have been assembled from parts found in this pile circa 1919? As a matter of fact, I think I see my helmet in the lower middle section of the pile. I think this may explain why this...

    JzP M15

Thanks. I recall seeing this helpful comparison on another thread. The spike on my JzF is 86mm, which is closer to the height of the JzP spike in the photo (88 mm). On the other hand, the proportions seem closer to the line infantry spike, so I'm not sure what to conclude about this piece.

    JzP M15

Hi Ron, Thanks for your observations. I agree that this helmet is not correctly configured and there no way to explain this as a correct period piece. However, it has been this way for a very long time and you can see the outlines of the wappen ghost on the front of the shell. I wondered...

    JzP M15

Here's one that I just pulled out of the woodwork. The manufacture's stamp is GBRJSRAEL and it's dated 1916. Interestingly, it has what looks like a Saxon Reich kokarde. Why do so many of these helmets surface with line eagle front plates rather than JzP front plates? I'm looking for an...

    Unteroffizier Feldartillerie Kugelhelm1915

Here's something that I recently pulled out of the woodwork - never been in a collection before. It's my current study object! This find got me going to Tony and Joe's websites and our library of reference materials. Here's the description that I worked up. This was not intended for advanced...

    US Sun Helmet ID Sought

Peter, Interesting... Thanks. I'll have to dig and see if I can find out more about the original owner's service history. The tidbit of information that I got from the auctioneer's helper may not have been right. Cheers, Mark

    US Sun Helmet ID Sought

Here's something I bought at an estate sale yesterday. The original owner may have served in Puerto Rico or maybe the Phillipines. The helmet was part of a lot of items associated with the owner's tropical service. I'm wondering if this might be a US military item, US civilian, British...

    Prussian JZP M1915 EM Metalhelme

Thanks. It was a lucky find. I've been debating whether to try to clean it because I think it would buff up nicely, but I decided to leave it as is.

    Prussian JZP M1915 EM Metalhelme

I just got this one in today. It's fresh out of the woodwork. I think it's interesting that they were still making these helmets in 1915. I wonder if they were actually used very much.

Larry, What a great photo! I'm posting it here so we don't lose the link after it gets deleted from the eBay database.

I wanted to keep this in the family collection but my "helmet fund" is in the red and my father's is pretty much at zero, so on the block it goes! Mark D. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300545338744&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

    American Pickelhaube

THAT is a very cool helmet! There couldn't be too many of these kicking around. I recall seeing a very similar helmet on Joe's website. I thought that one might be unique, but I see there are at least two of these. I was hoping somebody would post more of this ilk for comparison. Notice the...

    Who does EXCELLENT pickelhaube restoration?

I love to see these transformations. Really remarkable! I've got to put a plug in here for Cameron Laughlin, who did a beautiful job with my Hessian IR115 and the American pickelhaube that I recently posted. He's a real scholar of 19th century leather craftmanship and militaria in general...

    American Pickelhaube

Yeh, It looked like a real piece of junk, but all the parts were there and I figured that it was restorable. I thought you might be interested in these old catalog excerpts. The first is the cover and an insert from the 1877 edition of the Horstmann catalog. I believe this was their first...

    American Pickelhaube

Hi Gus, Here you go. Cameron's re-stitching on this piece was a real bit of craftsmanship. It follows the original stitch pattern and uses materials that would have been used in the period. Close up it is very hard to detect that any repair has been done. This was a very satisfying...

    American Pickelhaube

Hi Brian, No traces of paint on the kokarden. The spike doesn't unscrew. My guess is that the spike was manufactured here. I'm not sure about markings on the underside of the spike base. Cameron removed the spike to reshape the bowl, but I myself haven't seen the spike off the helmet. I...

    American Pickelhaube

Hi Ron, Here you go. The liner is a copy of the German type, but is irregular in the cut and the placement of the holes for the liner tie. The only marking in the dome is for the size: 7 5/8". As Cameron pointed out, this is abnormally large for a 19th century piece. On the cape it is...

    American Pickelhaube

Here are photos of an American Pickelhaube that I picked up at the SOS a few weeks ago. For those of you who saw this piece in Louisville, you’ll recall that the visor and cape were detached. I sent the piece to Cameron Laughlin for re-stitching and he did a masterful job. According to the...
