Crazed leather - what to do, if anything?

Nice helmet, the crazing is part of it's history and not damage, you are right to leave it as is. Kevin

Mod. 1900 helmet for other ranks of East Expeditionary Corps

I've used a photo editing app to play around with the exposure and color settings to enhance the markings. The lightroom mobile app is free and easy to use.

    Baden vulcan fiber

Good point, the holes did line up. Brian have you ever seen vulcan fiber painted like this before, I've searched and can't find another one like it. Other than making it so the stamps are visable I can't see why they would add this extra step. Kevin

Thanks Steve, as I said the rear visor was held on with glue, could just be a replacement somebody stuck on there. Kevin

    Baden vulcan fiber

Here is a my Baden vulcan fiber with a Lieb-Grenadier wappen and silver fittings. Both visors needed to be sewn back on, the front was held on by the trim pins and a staple, the rear was glued in the corners and held in the center by the rear spine. The interior was painted a tan color and then...

    IR 111

Hi Lars Thank you for the explanation. I do see a second set of stitching holes in the ohrenleder. It's hard to tell for sure because the shell is so dry, but edge of the helmet does not seem thinner than the rest of it. Looks like it could be an older shell. Kevin

Hi Lars I don't see any obvious signs of it being cut down but to be honest I wouldn't even know how to tell. Would they have replaced the wappen as well or just moved the hooks to make the plate fit. The hooks on mine haven't been messed with. That being said the 1889 date is puzzling. Thanks Kevin

Wasn't sure I could get enough movement to fill the gap between the shell and the spine and hadn't considered soldering on a new split pin...brilliant! I'll give it a try. I didn't keep track of the hrs., but with many coats of shellac, drying time, sanding, melting the dust with 195 proof...

Brian pointed out the 1876 formula to me, so I used it with lampblack for the color and finished it off with parade gloss black shoe polish.

Here is a project I purchased a while back from emedels. The markings on the interior are pretty clear except for the date after 3B, looks like it could be 1910. Hope someone here can enlighten me as to what they all mean. Here it is as I got it. And here it is after reshaping and refinishing...
