A new project for Peter.

Hi all, regarding the paint (varnish) that was used for brass sheets. It was usually shellac based varnish along with other natural resins and a lead based dye. This dye is not currently available. The original dye changed colour when exposed to the sun.
In the period after 1900, the varnish was applied to silver plates and had a different composition. These are gilding techniques. As you can see in the pictures three different varnishes are applied.
Greetings to the specialist from Gdansk.

Hello just today I finished the Wappen. It had a copper colour to it. I chemically cleaned it (lightened it) but it still had a copper colour. So I chemically applied zinc to make it more yellow. Today I made a gilding varnish using a recipe from the early 20th century. Painting with such varnish goes back to around the 12th century. The effect surprised me on the plus side.
Judge for yourself.
Nowadays varnishes are made synthetically, you can come across shellac, but these are only rather protective varnishes.

Make a new thread in the restoration section, because no one will find it afterwards.

I finished the repair, the last thing was to straighten the hardware of the front visor of the helmet.
