As Zeb wrote, this is a shako for officers of the Hanoverian Garde Jäger Battalion from around 1860, perhaps a little bit earlier.
In the middle an 8-rayed star, in the center St. George slaying the dragon, with the motto "Numquam Retrorsum" (Never Back). A black hair plume was worn with it.
In 1866, Hanover was annexed by Prussia and the Hanoverian troops were transferred to the Prussian army. Garde-Jäger became JB 10.
Interestingly the Hanoverian infantry line regiments wore the pickelhaube, introduced in 1846. Around 1860 they switched to the Austrian style shakos.
