Must me a Mech thing.

Exceptional photo indeed. Note the prussian belt-buckle and the "wrong" fluted spike. Never seen another one with fluted spike on strelitz helmet.

You are correct, the Mecklenburg EM spike is taller:

Very interesting. The Saxons did not seem so precisely with the rules, because according to the saxony clothing regulations the spike should measure similar to the prussian one. And I think this would be similar valid also for Mecklenburg.
According the Saxony clothing regulation for officers from 1894, the spike should measure with Base 9,7 - 10,2 cm (Ball: 6.2 - 6.7 cm). The Prussian Officer-Spike was defined with 10.5 - 11.5 (1871-1895) and was reduced to 9.5 cm (Ball: 7 cm) in 1895.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a post 1895 Saxony clothing regulation, but I believe that the spike height has also been reduced according to the regulations.
