SOS 2010

I think the helmet might have cost as much as the tank :? :? I will probably not buy anything but I lied about that previously and bought a helmet last year just to keep it out of the hands of James. We are not even going to the casinos this year. Three more cruises one of them 45 days long and then we are taking everyone to Disney World over Christmas. I don't think the dog even knows what snow looks like. Last time we drove without the casinos we ended up staying in the town that was Bill Clinton's birthplace. The only dry county around. This year we are bringing our own. Kaiser beer for everyone!

Woo hoo, we are all going to Disney world over Christmas.

The only problem with buy a helmet just to keep James from buying it, is that there are far too many helmets to protect, it may be better to allow James to buy a helmet and run out of money early.

Opps, I see I made a mistake, I thought you bought a tank, I forgot about the helemt, it is way better than a Toyota Prius, at least it will not take you flying off a cliff, or into a brick wall. I think I would rather have that helmet than a button.
Do not expect any sympathy from the cheap seats, Tony.
Best wishes
Gus

Okay boys and girls -- getting down to crunch time. If you need my cell phone number send me a PM and I will return it with the number. It is a good deal to get the number for James and Gus, and anyone else you want to talk to also. Radios have been used in the past without a great deal of success. The hall is absolutely huge so if you need to talk to someone the best bet is to call them on a cell phone -- otherwise you could be walking around for a long time. I understand Craig Gottlieb will be driving his Segway again. Now that Gus is coming again!!! You might need his number to call ahead for lunch!

For those going to the German restaurant on Wednesday night, please meet somewhere between five and 530 downstairs in the lobby at the La Quinta. There will be several cars available I'm sure. If you need a ride to get to the hotel in the first place let us know in advance and we will work some way to pick you up -- not aimed at you directly Alan, even if you are staying at the wrong hotel!

What else am I forgetting?

Hey Joe,
Alan can walk, after the hotel is with in walking distance of everything in Louisville, that means any one can get any where in town by walking to the hotel first.

I'll be getting to Louisville sometime late day Wednesday. I don't think I can get into the show until noon on Thursday.

See you guys next week.

I called to confirm reservations ot the hotel, she told me that they thought they would have the snow cleared off the parking lot by next week, I think we will pack our cross country skis just incase.
Gus

Last year it was like spring up until Saturday and then it was like summer almost! This year it will be more like two years ago when we had the ice storm. I think this will be a chilly SOS. Bring a coat!

You have got to be kidding me. All these guys from Minnesota and Wisconsin what ever happened to global warming? We are totally unprepared for this. I am to take the woman I love and that stupid dog up to ice Station zebra? Several years ago we stole an ice scraper from James. I know where it is but we better find it. We put 100 books and two cases of beer and the T-shirts in the car yesterday. Maybe we should use the book pages as insulation?? Are the planes landing at the airport?

Hey Joe,
The weight of the books will give you better traction. We are getting a late start this morning, we were up at 3:00 this morning shooting at dogs in the sheep, did not get back to sleep until 6:00.
The weather still looks good for the first 1,700 miles, the last hundred or so could be a bit slow, we had planned on taking the southern route, but with snow in Texas, we deceided to go through the North pole, I read somewhere that there is no snow at the poles, and it is very warm.

Just to report in that we had a very nice drive today, we made nearly 400 miles, and are sleeping in a very comfortable bed tonight. Weonly have about 1,800 miles more to go, it would have been much less, but as we had engine trouble before we got to Wyoming, we turned around and headed back, most everything is transfered to the car, and we will start out early tomorrow. If I have to get up at 3:00 to shoot at dogs again, I think we will just jump in the car and head down the road.
Best

Gee Jerry
Chill out, it's all good, we still have enough time to get to Kentucky to be able to short sheet all the beds and order wake up calls for 4:00 in the morning (I did that to James last year, and then found out that was when he had to get up to catch his flight, I hate it when I do something nice, if I had known, I would have made the wake up call later, so he would have missed his flight, and he could have bought another round of beer.)

Travel safely, guys. Weather has been a bit dodgy down here in the center of flyover country.

Packed half the truck tonight, will finish tomorrow. Fortunately we have acquired some help to stay here and take care of the place while we are gone. Good for security, and good for business as well since a surprising number of people do not for whatever reason go to this show. In years past I have always been amused when these folks get angry that their ___ (order, inquiry, package, etc.) is not attended to for a week or so while we and pretty much the rest of the militaria community are busy in Louisville.

See you all soon!!

Janet and I have packed everything warm that we have. Off we go this morning but are staying south through Louisiana. See you all soon!

Drive safe everyone! We're getting pounded by more snow & strong winds here in NW Iowa today. We've had over 60 inches of snowfall here in Fort Dodge (yes, sixty inches!) so far this winter. The schoolkids are off again for their 13th day this winter. Looks like they'll be going to school until the end of June!

I've had two Sundays of driving back on slippery roads, and am really sick of this winter!!! :x At least I got to see the girlfriend the past couple of weekends. I was really lucky to also purchase a WW2 Killed in Action Purple heart a couple of Sundays ago, and did research on him this past Saturday in Cedar Rapids: a 23rd June '45 USMC killed on Okinawa, Chief Cook/Sgt., probably one of the last Marines to die in major battle in WW2. Even stumbled onto his grave on Saturday afternoon whilst looking for it, so I got to pay my respects to him for giving his life for our country. And also aquired some great paperwork on him as well.

At least I get to be in the passenger seat early Tuesday morning, but I know that our first couple hours of drivetime are going to be on crummy, slippery 4-lane roads again. At least there won't be much traffic out in the early morning hours!

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Alan Schaefer

Fascinating from here in Scotland to see all you guys describing these epic road trips you're about to undertake, or in Gus's case already are. This must be a hell of a good show! I assume you don't fly because you're taking stuff for stalls, or hoping to come back laden with goodies?

Anybody at this jamboree sell Victorian British helmets?

Safe travelling

Patrick

Ugh! My flight tomorrow to Michigan has been canceled! My wife and I are now packing and going to dash to the airport to get out before the storm hits the New York City area.

I'm driving down from Michigan with my father on Wednesday. But I'm glad I wasn't flying on Wednesday. Flights from New York and Washington DC are already being canceled!
