I will give it a shot. No one ever said I was infallible at this! Actually it puzzled me for a very long time and I am not sure if I am right or not. It seems to me that the first digit should be a L. But it looks more like a hollow I.

?GEBR109 = Lieb Garde Ersatz Bn. Reg. 109

That is an educated guess but I really like looking at those. I'm also stalling and need more coffee! :coffee:

PS – nice helmet

Perhaps II EB R109

That is the 2nd Replacement Battalion of Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 109 - 2. Ersatz-Bataillon Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 109.

Hello Gents,
What´s about II GBRR 109?
Here a similar one of the I Bataillon. Maybe II (or I) Grenadier Bataillon Reserve Regiment 109?

Very impressive.

So in this regiment's case, the cross is the same color as the plate for an enlisted man's helmet.

Did the officer version have a contrasting (gold) cross?

Extremely nice helmet!
The original R109 plate must have been affixed by hooks, not screws, therefore the helmet must have received an all different plate when affected to the reserve, not just a reserve cross added to the active plate. It is not infrequent to find M95 reserve helmets with screwed emblems.

I´m wondering a little bit about that ....In my opinion, cross should be gilt, because the wappen is silver :-k
This is the "normal" rule.

Isn't this a nice helmet! There is one more thing though. How big is the cross? Bruno has the record at 36 mm. How big is this one?

Joe my cross is also 36 mm so Bruno and me have the biggest crosses of this forum :D .

Image

Argonne indeed it is the normal standard that silver wappen have a gilt cross and gilt wappen have a silver cross i dont know why my silver wappen have a silver cross i have checked the backside of the wappen and i am 100% sure that the cross have always been on this wappen , my helmet is from the second battailon and they did wearing white parade plumes maybe that is why the cross is white :-k ???

Excellent pics, that is just such a sweet helmet. Great 3 piece wappen, excellent markings. It would be impossible to get one any better. Does anyone else out there have one so we can compare characteristics? We did a thread on JR 115 perhaps JR 109 also deserves one.

Helmut Weitze has one for sale that also bears a white reserve cross:

Unfortunately, as he says himself, first a prussian helmet remounted as a 109 helmet...Bad for me, the fixation of the Reserve cross too....Bad feeling [-X

Philippe
Philippe, look at Jim Turinetti's guide "The Reserve/Landwehr Kreuz of the Imperial German Army" p.45. He clearly describes "Two configurations for the placement of the LWK on the (R109) helmet plate", one of which is on the side of the scroll, just like on Weitze's helmet. This is illustrated with a picture of an R109 officer helmet with a "lateral cross".

Thank you Bruno, never heard about that before 8-[
However, if the wappen is good on Weitze´s helmet, I am pretty sure it has been resoldered at the back to fit in the holes of this helmet, which are "prussian holes". There are no double holes and just look at the distance between them: too small for a 109 griffin plate....And you can easily see some traces of a prussian eagle plate at the front, between the wings and the head of the griffin :-&
