Any fellow members here who enjoy a good Bier ?

Beer O'clock just ended mate! But I will remember!

Just getting started here in the states with all these great Euro's 2024 games, a few Biers will be drunk during this tournament no doubt.

It's a fun way to add to the drinking and game experience.

Pick a match and a team and buy a few Beers from the team you're supporting that day. Each country who made it this far have a few good beers worth trying and some have some GREAT beers. ;)

No offense, but a comment like that makes me think you are a novice beer drinker Khukri. (😆😆) Ha ha ha.
Every hour is potentially Beer O'Clock. 😉

Prost/Cheers/Silánte/Santé to all.

I can imagine that it would be a lot of fun to live in an area where there is a German club such as this.

Looks like a very nice selection available on this list.

Looks like the bar at the Lancaster Liederkranz if memory serves. I haven't been up that way in a while, but they have some nice events and a nice clean club house with a nice bar and beer list. 🍻 👍

Sadly, all the German clubs in Maryland have changed so much with the passing of all the older members that we have left our memberships elapse.

Yes, it's the Lancaster Liederkranz. I also belong to the Reading Liederkranz. Both were founded in the late 19th Century; obviously as singing clubs. It's rather common here in Pennsylvania, but it wasn't like that in the German clubs in New Jersey. In NJ they were strictly social clubs. All the clubs have lost most of their older members who immigrated to the US after WWII.

BTW, the Lancaster Liederkranz has their Oktoberfest the same weekend as the Max Show, and is only 20 minutes away. It's only 1 of the 2 events open to the public. Lots of show attendees make it there on Friday evening. 🍻

The Turner Hall in New Ulm, MN is still active, and also has a restaurant and bar. The Turnverein movement was big in many of the German communities in the midwest. Davenport, IA also had a Turner Hall. I'm not sure if it is still active or not. My uncle's wife grew up in Davenport. She's told me about going to the Turner Hall in Davenport with her brother and parents when she was a child, and about the good German culture there.

The historic 1860 August Schell Brewery in New Ulm, MN is still in operation. In 2002, they purchased Grain Belt.

Alan, Davenport still has an active Schützenverein which was founded in 1862. It's not at the same location though. Schützen Park was founded in 1870, and the Turngemeinde was associated with them back then. They had a range, dance hall, etc. Now its just a 26-acre park, and its decline occurred during WWI with the severe anti-German sentiment which was nationwide.

Ohio (Cincinnati, Dayton, & Columbus) still have a number of German clubs. The later still has a couple of shooting clubs. I visit some after the SOS or the OVMS Wilmington shows.

Because I run a Schützenverein at a range in Maryland I've studied all this. Could go on and on, but I don't want to hijack this thread.

Rediscovered my collection of Bierdeckels, most of which are from the 5 years I was stationed in Germany. Recent trips don't yield many more as my wife doesn't like it when I "pinch" them....

Hi Willi,

Thanks for the great information on Davenport and Ohio! I was not aware that Davenport still has an active Schützenverein, which was founded in 1862. That's good news that it is still active!

I understand about the decline of the Schützenverein and the Turngemeinde, due to the anti-German sentiment during WW1. I have heard stories from my friend who grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota, and from a late friend who grew up in Forest City, Iowa, and how it was like for many German ancestry towns and the families during WW1.

My late grandfather who was born in 1903 and was a 2nd generation U.S. citizen told me that when he was a teenager, the family woke up one morning during WW1 to discover the front door of their farmhouse painted black. Apparently this happened to other 1st and 2nd generation German-Americans in that area of far south central Minnesota.

Best Wishes,

Alan

That's a great collection of Bierdeckels! Nice to see the assortment!

Do they keep and re-use these after each customer? Many years ago when I was in college I worked part time as a waiter in a restaurant, we threw these away after each use. Would they give you one if you asked when you are finished? That might be a good way to continue acquiring more of them on your trips.

Best Wishes,

Alan

My German club found 2 Berliner Weisse glasses. So, I tried a couple....

My father used to tell me whenever he was in Berlin on leave from the Luftwaffe he would enjoy a couple as well.20240815_193035.jpg

I remember my first Berliner weisse in Berlin, when the bartender asked me "rot oder gruen" I didn't know what he was talking about. Once it was explained to me, I first tried the rot schuss. That was the raspberry it was pretty good then I tried the green (woodruff) which was also ok.

The sourness of the Berliner weisse you can get in a bottle or can in the states just isn't my kind of Weissbier, but certainly worth a try and much cheaper than the flight to Berlin. ;)

Wonder what flavor your father enjoyed during his time in Berlin, I prefer the rot when there. (y)

Picked this up to help supplement my Bier selection for Oktoberfest 2024.

Being a Bier lover in the USA you have to be a bit creative it's not like you can go to your local pub and have a fresh tap Bier that is delicious and locally Brewed.

I envy our Belgian and German members for that ability but I'm happy to have found something that highlights German Biers that do not have distribution here in the USA. A rare treat 👍

The highlight for me will be the Klosterbrau Rauchbier aus Bamberg that is my favorite Brewery in Bamberg. I'd prefer a fresh Braunbier from them but as they say beggars can't be choosers. ;) Prosit 🍻
