Gewehr 98 Unit Marking help needed

I have to disagree with what you say vehemently. There is no myth that the heat treatment on the first million or so 1903 rifles made by Springfield and Rock Island was defective in application . It was found conclusively that under casehead failures and as often longitudal splis and peirced...

SF Bowie and US M1 Helmet questions...

Does anybody have a friend whom collects US fighting knives and or US helmets ?. I've got a good friend retired US Army whom inherited some neat things from his late older brother ( whom was also retired US Army 1946 -1977 ). One is a rather nice Pathfinder logo painted on M1 steel helmet and...

Regimental marked rifles , what like pokers have you ?

George , my bad it's landstrum... and it's marked on the front band. I have pictures of it on the gewehr collectors group on the yahoo thingy if you still visit it. I have encountered a handfull of gew88's with unit marks applied to their receivers but none in any fashion matching.

Regimental marked rifles , what like pokers have you ?

I have a 1900 Danzig matched down to the rod - the one marked to the 120th. I've got a 1913 Amberg marked to the 68th Regt , but it's a bolt mismatch. Most of the pre 1914 regimental marked gew98's I've encountered are reworked/salvaged to outright "faked up". But they are out there. I only...

    1st Konigsberg Grenadier and Landwehr

Awesome !. I can't fathom with the rifle ,bayonet , belt , helmet and such you found no remains. Seems odd such things were left like that with no bones. Anyhow amazing - and damn nice buckles !.

    SEITENGEWEHR M98 BAYONET

George ; Bayonets and rifles were not unit marked "together". The likelihood that you will find a bayonet marked exactly like a rifle is great...but it has nothing to do with it being 'mated' by that marking to an identically marked rifle. You can find pre war german bayonets and rifles that...

    Jagers in WW1

A little addendum I forgot. The snaildrum magazine was minimally unreliable , and as such I don't think it coupled with the P08 pistols of any model would have been seriously used by assault troops. The very few MP18's that reached the front all were made to use the 32 round snail drum...

    Jagers in WW1

Mark ; The Kar98a was adopted in 1907 , and was never listed in any german military publication with an 'AZ' as part of it's nomenclature before during or after WW1. The AZ thingy was a supposition stated by Walter's early books and has since been accepted mistakenly as official german...

    See anything unusual?

If antone want's a tad more detail on the gew88/98 wartime shortages - especially pre 1916 you need to get ahold of a copy of Deiter Storz's most excellent work on the gew98/kar98a. It's simply titled "M98 RIFLE & CARBINE". AGM has it on their website for something like $130 and it's worth every...

    Sawtooth 1884/98 Bayonet

I've had a couple of these 84/98's marked to MG's. The best one was marked to a Maschinengewehr Scharfschutzen Abtielung. I traded them all to Jeff Noll. I have a 71/84 that is marked to an M.G.K. , but damn if I can find a 71/84 or loose imperial 84/98 scabbard for it. As already mentioned...

    Mystery Wappen

Basically when getting into such details regarding the gew98 and gew88 - such minutia like how many and when , Walter's book has to be taken with a bit of salt. The gew88 use in german service during the great war was large - more so on the eastern front then the western front . Reserve...

    M1916 Camouflage Helmet

Simon ; I have read at least two American regimental histories that describe enterprising individuals in their ranks "setting up shop" painting german helmets .You know the sort of pimp my hat fascination that has made other veterans nickel plate pistols and attach rather silly stories to same...
