I can not wait for SOS 2009, I know that this posts seems a bit premature, but it is time to start thiniking about making table reservations for the show, only 369 more days until SOS 2009.
Best wishes
Gus
PS Safe travel wishes to all traveling to the show this next week

Gus,

I have it in my calendar as five through eight March next year. James is getting tables at the show in 2008 for everyone interested. Last year they let me make hotel reservations at the show for the following year.

We made it to the hotel, it took two days to get here, but we are ready for the show. Joe is lost somewhere in Mississippi at a casino, it will take him three days to drive half the distance, but he was hanidcapped by the fact that he lives in Texas. Texas all think their state is so big that it takes two days just to get to the boarder. Joe was crying about how cold it was, Maggie had to explain to him how to adjust the car heater, as they have never used it before, but they are in luck, as it is supposed to be above freezing in Kentucky when they get here.
Best wishes
Gus

Gus: Well all I can say is that I envy all of you guys who are going to make it to the SOS. God and my accountant willing, I will make it there solo for 2009. Solo is a lot cheaper so I may even have some cash to spend once I fly into good old KY. I refuse to stop collecting despite my present situation. Have a great time guys and send me some pics of the festivities. All the best, Brian

:D :D James and other minnesotans, how could you leave the wonderful [-20's to -30] temps and go to warmer?? states! Hope everyone has a good time. I hope to join you next year. Dick :D :D

So what did you buy next year? More importantly what did I BUY next year? :D

The word is that the Executive Inn will be torn down. Again the word is that it will not be opened for next years show -- LaQuinta is already taking reservations.

James did everything possible on the tables. We shall see. We were caught in sort of a catch 22 because we did not have existing tables. Though the show operators do an amazing job it is frustrating at times when you see empty tables or as was the case this year three tables full of Hawaiian shirts. Tables were long ago sold out. The operators of the show were also on the loudspeaker trying to sell tables for the max. Almost all the people I talked to thought that was the lesser show by far.

I agree about the empty tables, and this is part of the reason I've stopped staying for Saturday. So many of the dealers pack up mid-day Friday to move down the hall. I just can't imagine they do much business at the gun show, but I guess I can their point. A lot more people hit the gun show, and don't come down the hall to SOS... but I have to wonder about anyone who goes only to the gun show, buys some militaria and doesn't bother with SOS? :-?

And MAX is much closer for me and I won't bother anymore. The only reason that show would make sense is that for my specialized collecting IF anything were there I'd have little competition. But that's hardly worth the travel expenses.

Has anyone gone to the big show in Canada in the fall? I've heard that's better than the MAX (if you're not into the Nazi-love fest sort of thing).

hello folks i'm new to this forum and just trying to read between the lines ...this sos convention is it at the executive inn in louisville ky? if it is than it will be complete by next year i go to a model kit convention there almost every year called wonderfest and it is normally held on memorial day but it is pushed back until july due to construction if i remember correctly it should be ready to go in october november 08. i would like to go to this sos show is there a site i could check ?

Sten

You're very welcome with us at SOS 09! If you read the thread about SOS08 you will find a great deal of information including the link to the hotel. Most of the pickle heads stay at the La Quinta. They are taking reservations now and I suggest you reserve one before they are sold out. You can always find a different hotel or a cheaper one but that is where people chitchat and helmets are sold before the show. I would recommend you arriving Wednesday sometime. Whether you stay for all of Saturday or not is your choice. The organizers of the show will have to do something to encourage attendance of the dealers Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

In my opinion, the entire show is about meeting people. This year I met Tony and Roy A. for the first time. What a treat! You learn so much from the other collectors and if you find something in the show you can count on all of your friends to give you an opinion on the item before you buy it. You have to move fast to beat James though! In the 08 thread you can figure the battle rhythm of the day. Do not worry about being new -- that is not an issue -- no one will think twice about it -- we just want the camaraderie. :D

Hi Sten--
Show Of Shows (SOS) is at the Kentucky Expo Center not the Executive Inn. The Expo Center is basically across the street. It is a large convention center.

The show has 1600 tables, so obviously it is too big for the Executive Inn. It is easily the best militaria show in North America.

And do not forget, La Quinta Inn is with in walking distance of everywhere in Louisville
Best wishes
Gus

i dug up the article on the executive west from one of my model kit sites
FYI...hopefully i'll be at sos and the wonderfest by the way great flight out of newark on continental airlines right to louisville small jet, quick flight.

It looks very probable that we are going to get a group rate at the hotel. I don't know exactly how much we save yet but existing reservations will apparently be added to the group and the discount applied. The group name is "pickelhaube.com" and I'm working a deal now for the rooms I know of that are already reserved:
Robinson
Trawnik
Sinclair
Rehr X2
LeBrasseur
Bryngelson

I don't think Thieman or Paul LeBrasseur or Turinetti currently have rooms and I am positive I missing others. Once I get this set up and a few more details anyone should be able to call the hotel and add themselves to the group for the group rate.

Okay we officially have a group rate! This is a very good deal I think and the people who already have rooms have been added to the group rate.

The hotel website is http://www.airportandexposuites.com/
the name of our group is pickelhaube's.com

The rate is $79. The requirement is to reserve your room by January 4, 2009.

The telephone number to the hotel is 502-368-0007

All you need to do is call them tell them which nights of SOS you want to book a room for, tell them you're with pickelhaube.com and you will get a confirmation number. I'm not involved. Call the hotel not me. No I do not get a commission from this. It is just a much better price. Anyone should be able to do it.
