    A very nice helmet, Tony! For comparison I happen to have a lacquered ersatz Bambus helmet also, only for line infantry. I believe one of the 50,000 emergency units ordered to cover the leather shortage of late 1914-early 1915 until stop-gap leather could be sourced from Argentina.

    Not that I'm considering it, but can the fire gilding process be replicated today? I seem to recall it involved chemicals considered quite dangerous today (mercury?)
