Hi John,
Nice grouping! Is the helmet stamped in any special way to indicate NCO usage?
Regards,
Lars

Thank you Lars!

The helmet would not be stamped to denote an NCO rank. This rank would only be denoted on the uniform itself with the lace trim.

Tony Schnurr has an excellent explanation of ranks and pickelhaubes on his site. Here is the link:

Thanks for the link John,
Yes, Tony's site is excellent.
I asked because I have a helmet marked "Unteroffizier Pagel" in the neck guard to indicate its owner, not stamped though, but written. Seems logical that the NCOs used the same helmet for years, and would therefor mark their helmets.
Regards,
Lars

Wouldn't the helmet have the NCO cockades or would they only be worn by NCO's "mitt"?

Sorry, I am adding to the confusion by using the term "NCO". I should have used the correct German rank of "Unteroffizier" when describing the uniform rank itself.

In my particular grouping, this "Unteroffizier" is wearing the standard issued mannschaften pickelhaube with the standard issued cockade which is correct.

Had he been an Unteroffizier mitt portepee he could have still worn an issue helmet but could have opted for a private purchase helmet where he could have added the officer pattern cockade.

Again, I will direct you to Tony's fantastic table of Pickelhaube Rank:

An Unteroffizier was the equivalent rank to a corporal. This was not a senior Staff NCO pay grade. I have an artillery Unteroffizier grouping and neither the Pickelhaube nor the private purchase Schirmmutze have "NCO" cockades.

The uniform grouping above for the 15th Regiment seems 100% correct.
You may want to visit Ebay and try to find his missing button.
Excellent grouping --- congratulations!

Thank you, John. You also have a fantastic grouping! Very, very nice!

I have the button courtesy of Tony, but my sewing skills suck and it is not that high on my wife's priority list. =)
