Oldenburgisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 91 Model 1867

Post by SkipperJohn » Sun Feb 09, 2020 12:55 am

This is my newest acquisition, an Oldenburgisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 91:

This Franco-Prussian War survivor was a Christmas present from my wife. Since it is a Model 1867 there is no rear spine:

Only one Kokarde was used. The Reichs Kokarde was not implemented until 1897:

The Wappen is stamped heavy gauge brass with the Oldenburg coat of arms attached. The Oldenburg Wappen is silver. The Wappen is held on with sliders (probably the dumbest application ever used on a Pickelhaube):

The liner shows wear but is still 100% intact:

The Oldenburgisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 91 was part of the 19th Division. It was formed on October 11, 1866 and was headquartered in Hannover. The division was subordinated in peacetime to the X Army Corps.

During the Franco-Prussian War, the division was a mixed unit, with Hanoverian, Oldenburg and Westphalian elements. It was subsequently reorganized so that it was recruited primarily from the former Kingdom of Hannover, which had become the Prussian Province of Hanover after 1866, along with Oldenburg, a grand duchy mostly surrounded by the Prussian province.

During wartime, the 19th Division, like other regular German divisions, was redesignated an infantry division. The Oldenburgisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 91 was part of the 37 Infanterie-Brigade.

During the Franco-Prussian War, the 19th Infantry Division fought in the battles of Mars-la-Tour and Gravelotte, and then in the Siege of Metz. It then fought in the Loire Campaign, including the battles of Beaune-la-Rolande, Beaugency-Cravant, and Le Mans.

This helmet completes the Franco-Prussian War Oldenburg headgear set:

The Schirmmutze is a Model 1867 (probably made after 1870 because of the thick piping) and was manufactured in Diez. Diez is a city in the State of Hesse. I assume that this is normal. I don't know if Oldenburg had a textile manufacturer at the time.

John :)

This is a great helmet and gift, congratulations.
Now you must find the cockade of the larger, older model to make it close to perfect!

I am not sure what you mean. The Kokarde on this helmet is 57mm, which technically would be too large and probably left over from an earlier Pickelhaube. The Kokarde size for enlisted was reduced to 51mm in 1867, so, if anything, I would need to find a smaller Kokarde rather than a larger one.

Sorry about the size; you are correct. 51 mm. I miswrote...
What I mean is that the cockade looks like new and this pale blue colour is very different from the regular dark blue of Oldenburg. Therefore, I was wondering if it could be a modern copy, or a repainted one. Is the cockade original? Could this unusual blue colour be an artefact of the photography?

I wrote about the Kokarde earlier in this post:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13930

I was wondering about the condition and the color. I asked the seller about it and he said that the cockade was "new/old stock". The seller is extremely reputable (IMO) and the paint is old. It did look as if the Kokarde had been mounted for display at some earlier time. The color was the biggest question that I had. I have seen other Oldenburg Kokarden that were so darkened that they looked more like a Württemberg Kokarde. The Shirmmutze Kokarde matches the color perfectly and I am 100% certain that the Schirmmutze Kokarde is original. It also shows little to no wear:

Image

I wrote another post that addressed Kokarden size, along with many other things, on Model 1860 here:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13705

The 1860 regulations reduced the Kokarde size to 56mm. In 1867 the size was reduced to 51mm. I have found it very common to have a 56mm Kokarde on M1867 helmets. All of my 1867's have the larger Kokarde except the 101st Saxon. I measured the Oldenburg Kokarde at 57mm, but my eyes are old so I could have missed it by a millimeter --- easily!

The helmet is a gift from my wife, but before she ever purchases anything for my collection she asks me to check it out, so I did get the opportunity to evaluate this Haube before I actually received it.

She's a wonderful woman!!!!

John :D

I'm sure she is! I wish somebody would offer me a spike helmet...
I was not aware of the existence of these light blue Oldenburg cockades. Larcade shows a 1867 enlisted Oldenburg cockade in dark blue and red. My oldest Oldenburg helmet is a Dragoner officer helmet, circa 1880, that also bears the dark blue old style officer cockade.
Interesting information! thank you for sharing.

I know what you mean. It seems that the color range for Oldenburg Kokarden is all over the board. I have seen almost black, dark blue, royal blue, and light blue. Perhaps it has to do with the manufacturer or maybe the color changed over the years. Maybe the Oldenburg inspector was color blind! :D
I must admit though, that light blue Kokarde are on almost all of the Schirmmützen and Mützen from Oldenburg that I have seen.

John :)

Yes Bruno, light and dark blue are totally OK for Oldenburg cockades, as they are for Braunschweig too! There are some variations indeed.

Yes Philippe, I know about these different shades of blue; in Mecklemburg too. This one is just the lightest blue I can remember seeing on an Oldenburg helmet cockade.
