Real or Fake III

Post by bcalkins » Tue Jan 28, 2020 4:15 pm

Hi,
Here is the last of three I am reviewing here on the forum. Please see the other two in the "everything pickelhaubes" discussion. I don't know enough to give my friend in Italy an informed opinion. Please help with advice on originality and value.
Thanks!

Hard to tell by your pics... are there any stampings in the helmet plate?

Body armour looks ok. (sappenpanzer) , it has been reproduced , but i don't thing this is one of them,

Check the inside of the Brow plate (stirnpanzer) for maker marks... also tap it with something metal , it should have a ring , opposed to a dull thud.

Both the body armor and the helmet shield should have heat treatment numbers stamped on them. Tape the shield with a piece of metal it should have a ring to it. Fakes make a thud.

Thanks! If real, can you estimate a value?

YOu do not have to use metal to get a Stirn Panzer to ring, a real one will ring with a knuckle.
OK, they are dolls, but they have kung fu grip! and weapons.

It's the real deal for sure. One can tell because of the shape and also the number on the left brow. It seems there is an "8" visible on these pictures, but they are not detailed enough to see exactly what it is. By looking at the shape, I would say it's an RV (Rheinmetal Vierssen) stamped plate. My guess would be that the stamp says "RV28" because that's the one I've encountered most true the years, but that's only a guess of course.
The strap of the stirnpanzer seems to be original, but to be 100% certain, we need better and more detailled pictures.
The grabenpanzer is also a good one with just one repair to one of the vertical straps it seems. Great to see one again!

Thank you all for your comments. I have passed them along to my friend in Italy. Looks like he hit the jackpot....if he can get this stuff for a good price.
I have not posted here in quite a while, so thanks again and best wishes to all for a great collecting year in 2020!

Hey Brian,
Giving prices is usually difficult, but to give you an idea, I paid $2200 (about 4 years ago) for a nice Stirnpanzer with a good M1917 helmet (with liner and chin strap) the strap on the Panzer is not original, and $1200 about 6 years ago for a nice Grabenpanzer with replaced straps. Both had very good original paint.
OK, they are dolls, but they have kung fu grip! and weapons.
